Yunnan Summary

This post will serve as a summary and monetary guide for planning your own trip to Yunnan. The average person travels for 2 weeks at a time, given that most employees can’t get off for more than that, and also that most people don’t have enough money saved for a longer trip. As a note before reading the guide, I must inform you that my trip was 9 days long including a 30 hour train ride from my home in Wuhan to the destination city of Kunming. At the time of this trip the current exchange rate was $1 = 6.85 RMB.
- Train from Wuhan to Kunming ~ 420rmb ($60) … This is what I paid for traveling DURING Spring Festival. Prices during the rest of the year will be much cheaper, possibly even as low as 200rmb. This was also the price for the hard sleeper; the only more expensive ticket being a soft sleeper.
- Bus from Kunming to Dali ~ 110rmb ($16) … Express 5 hour ride
- Bus from Dali to Lijiang ~ 65rmb ($9) … 3 hours long
- Private car from Lijiang to Dali ~ 60rmb ($8.50) … 3 hours long
- Bus from Dali to Kunming ~ 100rmb ($14.50) … Express 5 hour ride
- Food* ~ 825rmb ($145) … We ate only Western meals on the trip, and the average cost was about 35rmb
- Accommodations** ~ 760rmb ($110)
- Miscellaneous ~ 900rmb ($115) … Includes souvenirs, activities, and taxis
- Plane from Kunming to Wuhan ~ 710rmb ($103) … Look at the first bullet note to see explanation
————————————————————-
= 3950rmb = ($575) … My budget was 4100rmb, so I came home with 150rmb!
*The meals are sometimes split between 4 people, and sometimes just 1 person.
**This depends on your ability to live cheaply. I personally don’t care about staying in guesthouses. The accommodations total was my personal expense, multiply by 2 for total cost, except for in Kunming
