Crazy Chinese Taxi
So if you didn’t think China could get any crazier.. last night took the cake. Mark and I went out to Hankou last night with Matt, Nick, and Fey to the night market. While there I bought 2 pairs of gloves: one with wool on the inside and is form-fitting, and the other is a rabbit fur on the inside but is not form-fitting. I also bought ear muffs and 2 pairs of wool socks. All in all, I spent 66rmb, or $9.50.
So after we traversed the entire market, we went back to their place and talked about the trip coming up next month. They were planning to go to Australia because it would be cheap, but whilst looking online for prices, we found a deal on eLong.com to go roundtrip from Guangzhou (in the south of China near Hong Kong) to Manila for 650rmb (before taxes)… that’s an international flight for less than $100!!! The flight to Sydney from Guangzhou costs about 4000rmb, which is closer to $1000.. so you can see why we have a renewed interest in the Philippines (our choice before Australia was decided upon).
So around 11:30 Mark and I left, only to find that the streets were empty and no taxis in sight. We walked about 10 minutes to the highway and then didn’t know whether to climb down and cross to the other side.. or walk along the raised side road and cross a bridge.. eventually we turned back towards their place and found a taxi.. after about 30 minutes of wandering around the highway. But from where we got the taxi, he could only make a right turn LEGALLY.. but then he would be stuck going in the opposite direction from our house because the highway has no turnoffs..
So he TURNS LEFT INTO TRAFFIC. He drove on the side of the road for about 5 minutes until he got to the offramp (which was still facing the other direction). Cars were actually COMING AT US but because it’s China and not America, they stop or move around no problem. If it were America we would have died in a head-on collision. So he waited for the cars to pass us and then makes a U-turn onto the offramp.. I heaved a heavy sigh of relief and fell back into the seat. The entire time I was screaming how he was insane..
Anyways, another day of no work.. yippie.
